Buy him christmas clothes online

It has reached that time of the year again when women come flocking into our shop looking for inspiration as to what to buy the men in their lives for Christmas. We thought it might be a good idea to give a few pointers in the right direction, as many of ye good female folks tell us it is impossible to know what to buy for your boyfriends, husbands, fathers etc…

We are also noticing that our online customers are having the same dilema and are not quiete sure what to buy from our website. We are a contrary ole bunch,us men,but there is nothing like a bit of good clobber to get us smiling again. The value that  out there online is great and if you are looking for some guidance we thought we might give you a hand.

Sometimes a gift voucher is the best option. However if you don’t trust your man to select something tasteful and trendy (which many of ye rightly do not) then park that option, unless you plan on accompaning him when he goes to town to do his shopping and use up the voucher.

A sensible purchase for Christmas is a nice warm, toasty jumper that will keep him warm over the festive season. Forget the loud, strong stripes and diamond patterns which represent the fasion of a bygone era and go for a plain, solid colour which are back in vogue again. A Christmas bestseller for us in always the Tricot Marine chunky jumper which is available in navy, red and blue. These jumpers are 100% wool and made from extra thick yarns which gaurantee your man will be all snugly and cosy over Christmas.

If he does not like a heavy jumper then go for something lighter from the Kellerman range which like Tricot Marine are designed and produced in Ireland.

These jumpers are a little lighter but there is a good palette of colours to choose from in both v and round neck.

If the man in your life has a wardrobe full of jumpers then perhaps a shirt in a gift box would make an ideal present. Our range of Andre casual shirts are always popular at Christmas and come in button down or regular collars. This season the Andre casual range comes in special presentation boxes which saves you the bother of having to gift wrap them. For the ultimate present get him a matching shirt and jumper from this range and get 15 quid off (which you will surely pass on to him and tell him to use it for a few pints at the weekend)!

With the recessionary onslaught continuing it is posible that your budget might not stretch that far however. Our Accessories Collection includes scarfs, cuff links, stud buttons and mens armbands which all come in gift boxes. The prices of these items make them very affordable and ideal gifts. For some more ideas for cost saving gifts visit the accessories page on our website.

Please remember that the option is there to have your present gift wrapped.

Our Nomination for best Internet Start Up Company

Our Nomination for best Internet Start Up Company

First of all, apologies to all our regular blog readers as it has been a while since I have updated our weekly blog.It has been a very busy couple of months for me personally and my blogging duties have been neglected.I am hoping to get motoring again and keep you all updated on the riveting goings on and happenings in the world of mens fashion and clothing.Well maybe not quite the world but at least what is happening down here in Cork.

Since I last blogged a few interesting things have been happening.Firstly our company was nominated for best Irish internet start-up company of 2011 by the Irish internet association.Unfortunately we did not win the coveted first prize but it was a great honour to be the only representative from the fashion industry. We recieved great exposure from the nomination and I am sure it will lead to even more recognition for us.The publicity we recieved from the nomination led to a lot of extra ciricular work for myself.I appeared on a few radio programmes talking about the use of technology for small businesses and have to say i thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As well as that I was honoured to be asked by Social Media Ireland to give a presentation on the use of video to increase brand awareness amongst small businesses. The picture is included below.

Our online business is continuing to develop and it has been an absolute pleasure to see orders coming from all over Ireland and international countries as well.A recent article on the well known website Silicon Republic featured an article on us recently and genererated more publicity for us.This is what they had to say about us.
Online menswear store proves fashionable overseas

A Cork-based online menswear store that launched last April, www.tom-murphy.ie, has already had orders from overseas, including from Bolivia.

Its founder Tom Murphy said the site specialises in selling men’s suits, shirts, ties and shoes online and believes there is no other site like it in Ireland.

“We also offer an online made-to-measure service, where people have to wait eight weeks for a wedding suit of their dreams to be produced,” he said.

“It is early days yet but we have already made quite a few sales. We have sold suits to customers around Ireland and we have had sales overseas, as well. We sent an order for a couple of suits to Bolivia. We also have recently done a made-to-measure suit for a customer in the US.
Massive international potential

“We feel there is massive potential for an Irish menswear store to reach into other international markets, and the Irish-American segment is particularly interesting. We try to give a unique online service based on what the independents do best — service and quality”

Wedding Suit Shoes

Wedding Shoes

There are two fundamental choices to make when choosing the shoes you will wear for your wedding. The first is the style.

Slip-on shoes are en vogue again and there is a huge array of options when it comes to formal mens slip-ons. Do remember that you will require an extra half-inch in trousers length if you are going for the slip-on option. A leather shoe is a must but if you feel more comfortable with a rubber sole, then that is fine. The only time that a casual shoe should be worn with a wedding suit is if the suit is linen or cotton, or if the wedding is taking place somewhere with a really hot climate. Beach weddings would be included in this category. A less formal shoe is perfectly acceptable in those circumstances.

The most popular shoe style that is worn with classic/morning wedding suits is the lace up black brogue. The classic round-toe brogue is traditional but elegant enough to make any wedding suit look smart and sophisticated. If you were going for a more tailored contemporary suit, then I would recommend a more pointed narrow type than the brogue. The long slender toe of Italian style shoes are perfect is this is the case.

A long slim shoe with a slightly pointed front is more suited to the silhouetted and narrow lapels of the slim fit suit. These suits tend to have narrower trousers bottoms so they can make wide fitting shoes appear clunky and awkward. They are particularly suited to narrow ended trousers

Mens’ suits – A guide to understanding the sizing system.

A suit can be purchased off the peg or made to measure. For off the peg suits there is a system of sizes in place to determine one’s size. The chest size in inches is the first and most important. The average size of a man’s chest would be between 40 and 42 inches.Smaller men would have a chest measuring 36 or 38 inches while bigger men go from 44 inches and upwards. If these sizes were to be converted to the small, medium and large scale you would have the following;

36 – small

38, 40 – medium

42, 44 – large

46 – extra large

48 – double extra large

Most suit manufacturers only offer a suit in even sizes. In other words one can not purchase a size 37 or 41 for instance. Sometimes if one is in between sizes it is better to go for a made to measure as this will allow an exact fit.

Unless a small suit is sold in mix and match format (most suits are not) the corresponding size of the trousers must be accepted. This is a table showing the corresponding trousers size for various jacket sizes.

36 jacket – 30 waist trousers

38 jacket – 32

40 jacket – 34

42 jacket – 36

44 jacket – 38

46 jacket – 40

48 jacket – 42

The next thing to watch out for is the three different coat lengths that a suit comes in. A short fit is usually for men of 5 feet 9 inches and under. Regular is usually for a man of average height, while a long is for the taller man. So for example, if a man is low in height and has a 42 chest, his size will be a 42s with a corresponding trousers size of 36s.

If you want to buy suits online there are a number of things to consider.

The most important thing is to get the right measurements .We have included a video of our own tailoring expert Mr.Tom Crowley showing how it is done.Tom has been with us for over thirty years and his expertise and knowledge of tailoring knows no bounds.
Suits come in sets so it is very important to be aware of the range of sizes that they come in. If the suit is not the mix and match type these are the trousers that go with the various jacket sizes;

36 – 30

38 – 32

40 – 34

42 – 36

44 – 38

46 – 40

48 – 42

All of these jackets and trousers come in short, regular and long fittings. Short is for a man of 5 feet 9 inches and under, regular is for a man of average height and long is for the taller man. The various trousers can also come in short, regular and long. A short leg is 29.5 inches, regular is 31.5, and long is 33.5. This may vary ever so slightly from supplier to supplier.

If the suit is available to buy online as a mix and match you can choose any size trousers to go with any size jacket. This can be very handy if the person is slightly disproportionate.

Once you know what the sizing system is it should be easy enough to figure out what sizes you need and most websites will have a sizing guide to help you through the self measurement process.

Just follow the instructions on the sizing guide and everything should be fine.

We decided to include a little video in today’s blog about how to go about measuring yourself for a suit. All you need is a willing partner who is happy to devote a few minutes of hus/ her time to you and a measuring tape. For a real bespoke fitting it is better to be measured by someone with true tailoring pedigree. However if you wish to buy a suit from an online suit store such as our own then this video will guide you through the process of self measurement. The good looking tailor in the video is our own Tom Crowley. I would like to send best wishes and a speedy recovery to Tom as he is just after a kidney transplant. Remember that most measurement tapes will have inches on one side and centimetres on the other so be clear what measurement system you are using.

First place the tape around your neck and leave a finger space and bring the start of the tape around to meet the other end. This will give you the neck size. Then place the tape around your waist, just below the navel and your size will be where the two ends of the tape meet. To measure the inside leg simply place the start of the tape in between join of the two trousers legs and measure all the way down to the top of the shoe heel.

To get the chest-size place the tape around the pectoral area of the chest and join together to give the size. Always leave a small bit of slack (roughly one inch) to be certain of gaining an accurate measurement.

Finally the sleave length and body length is the easy part. All suits will either be a short, regular or long fit. The measuring tape is barely needed to determine this as a short fit will nearly always be applicable to a man of 5 feet 8 inches and under. Meanwhile a regular fit will be for an average height man and a long fit will be for someone over 6 feet tall. There is a video recording that we have made that explains it all

Measuring for Mens Suits

The Van Kollem Autumn/Winter suits just arrived in store. The most important colours are the charcoal, silver and black in a fine weight wool. The grey suit will continue in popularity because it matches up so well with (the colours of the moment) purple and lilac. A grey suit with a purple shirt will probably be the most consistently sought after look in mens formal wear this season.
The other good news is that Van Kollem has brought down the price of their suits. They retail for €249, which is a very keen price for suits of such renowned quality. Linings for the seasons will be quirky strips with lilac trims. Most of the classic range will feature a stylish second ticket pocket on the front. The fit will remain on the slim side but most of the range will avoid the  ultra slim.
The legs of a Van Kollem suit will be tapered in slightly to give a fashionable look and feel, even though overall appearance will still be classical.

Alan-Red-Nvvy-192x300The new collection of Andre formal shirts and casual shirts for Autumn/Winter 2010 has just arrived. The formal shirts collection is once again dominated by plains and very subtle stripes.

For the first time in a number of years the check patterns will be important. The trend in men’s shirts is moving towards the check patterns again and we are predicting that the blue Andre check and lilac Andre check shirts will be top sellers for the coming season.

All Andre formal shirts will continue to be sold in a lovely presentation box that makes them an ideal gift for special occasions.

Following on from the extraordinary success of its first foray into casual knitwear last year, the company will be offering a wider palette of colours to choose from and all will be available in a 100% combed cotton texture and V-neck style. All of the sweaters will come with recommended shirts from the casual range. The casual range features bright lilacs, blues and vibrant purples and make an ideal gift as they are also packaged in a presentation box.

Just before you have been invited to an old friend’s wedding, you have suddenly realised the invitation stipulates that it is a black-tie affair. This doesn’t mean that you should be engulfed by panic, even if the wedding is imminent.

There are basically two options:
1) Get on the phone and reserve a tuxedo at your local suit hire outlet or
2) (increasingly becoming  more popular) Buy a new tuxedo online from a formal wear store such as www.tom-murphy.ie

Most websites that sell formal wear will deliver a tuxedo to your door within a couple of days. Going for a brand new tuxedo ensures you will look your best on the day and have a tux permanently in your wardrobe instead of having to rush in and hire a tux at the last minute.
The most popular type of tuxedo at the moment is the two-button notch lapel style. It suits all shape and sizes and can have side vents, centre vents or no vents. Our Scott tuxedo is a two-button style with side vents and, at €149, represents seriously good value.
Another popular dress suit that we sell is from, Dutch super brand, Van Kollem. At €249, a Van Kollem tuxedo is slightly more expensive but then again, it is made from a high-end fabric and the manufacturers have done their homework, as the fit is superb.

It looks great with a skinny tie and black shirt as you can see from the picture of Tom below. For a  more conventional look, tuxedos can be simply worn with a black bow-tie and wing collar shirt
